Of local origin from the town of Dumbarton, Magister Richardus de Dunbretan witnessed a charter by Constantinus de Lochor in 1235 (RD., p. 102), Clement de Dumbertan appears as a witness in Dumbarton in 1271 (RMP., p. 192), and c. 1334 Ada filius Alani de Dunbretane appears in the same role (Levenax, p. 93). About 1350 a confirmation charter of the land of Bullul was granted to Robert de Dunbretane (ibid., p. 69), and in 1390 there is mention of another Robert de Dunbrettane et heredibus (RAA., II, 40). Robert de Dunbretayn, cleric at Inuerkethyn, witnessed a charter of 1354 (Kelso, p. 385). Alfred Dumbarton is author of Gypsy life in the Mysore jungle, London, 1902.
