Of local origin from the town of Dumfries. William de Dunfres was keeper of the Rolls of Scotland in 1291 (Bain, II, 526). Master Alan de Dunfres was appointed chancellor of Scotland in 1296 (ibid., II, 606,612), and Robert de Dumfries was a monk of Holyrood in 1299 (ibid., II, 1052). Nicholas de Drumfres, tenant of Knockynchangill in 1376 (RHM., I, p. liv) may be the Nicholas de Drumfres, burgess of the same, who erected a chantry in the chapel of St. Nicholas, Dumfries, in 1394 (SCM., V, p. 250). John de Drumfreys "filius et apparens heres Herberti Atkynsoun" is in record in 1460 (LCD., p. 253).
