This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Humphrey,' a nick, form, probably as old as — 'Humpty-Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty-Dumpty had a great fall.' which unmistakably refers to Humphrey; compare Hodgson and Dodgson, both from Roger; also Hobson and Dobson, both from Robert.

'Mr. Dumphrey, a working man, will second the resolution': Standard, May 14, 1886.

Mr. Dumphries, the churchwarden (St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey), said the hissing occurred at the mention of the Queen and Royal Family, and also at the Eighth Commandment': Standard, Feb. 9, 1887.

The following entry reminds us of Dumfriesshire, but it need not trouble us, I imagine. It is probably imitative.

1721. Baptised — James Dumfrise, a native of East India, a servant to Sir John Brown: St. Michael, Cornhill.

Possibly a Scotchman gave him the name of his native county.
