Dunlap Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Dunlop' 'Traced to the year 1260, when Dom. Gulielmus de Dunlop was lord of Dunlop, in Ayrshire, an estate still in the possession of the family' (Lower's Patr. Brit). This Scotch surname in the form of Dunlap swarms in the United States. A Mr. Dunlop at a dinner party, where puns on names were the subject of conversation, said,' No pun could be made on his name.' 'Oh, yes, sir,' said a guest; 'lop off the last syllable, and it is done.' Although not an English surname, I have entered it in this dictionary as many Scotch names have become so familiarized on English soil that the fact that they are immigrants is well-nigh forgotten by many.

Constantyn Dunlop of that Ilk is mentioned in 1496 (Buccleuch MSS.). Downlop 1564, Dunlape 1683, Dunlope 1573, Dunloup 1599. In the United States the surname appears as Dunlap.
