A surname of local origin from the place of the same name in Caithness. The local pronunciation is "Dinnet." Sir Gilbert Dynnocht who was vicar of Arndurnes (Durness) before 1541 (OPS., II, p. 702), as Sir Gilbert Dunnat, vicar of Ra, is recorded as deceased in 1550 (ibid., p. 742). Master John Donat or Dunnat appears as rector of Cannesbe (Canisbay) in 1577 and 1581 (ibid., p. 792). Mergaret Dinit appears in Snawburgh, 1648 (Shetlard), and Katharine Donnat in Holand-Mey appears in 1663 (Caithness). Matthew Dunnett and George Dunnett in Gilles, Caithness, to be apprehended as rebels, 1670 (RPC., 3. ser. III, p. 194). Dunet 1700, DUNNING. From Dunning in Lower Stratheerr., Perthshire. The founder of the old family of this name was Anechol, thane of Dunning, who witnessed Earl Gilbert of Stratherne's charter of Madernin (Maderty), c. 1199 (Inchaffray, p. 3), and the same earl's foundation charter of Inchaffray in 1200 (ibid., p. 6). He was succeeded by his son, Gillemichel de Dunin who appears in record c. 1208 (ibid., p. 25). Roger de Dunyn, a cleric, was a charter witness c. 1214—49 (Scon, p. 57), and B de Dunyne or Dunin, steward (senescallus) of Robert, earl of Strathern, appears as a charter witness c. 1226—34 (Inchaffray, p. 47, 49, 50). John Donnung was received to the king of England's peace in 1321 (Bain, 111,724), Christi Dunyng witnessed a sasine of lands of Tullibody in 1437 (SCM., V, p. 260), Magister Johannes de Donyn was vicar of the church of Perth in 1440 (RD., p. 297), Robert Donyng was seven times provost of Perth, 1472—92, John Dunnyng had remission for his part in burning the town of Dunbertane, 1489 (Lennox, II, p. 133), and John Donyng or Dunnyn was bailie of Perth in 1514 (OPS., II, p. 662,663). John Donyng and James Donyng were witnesses in Perm, 1541 (Rollok, 38). Doning 1477, Dwnnynge 1561, Dynning 1643.
