From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An old Berwickshire family, Dunse of that Ilk, derived their surname from the lands of that name in the shire. Hugh de Duns witnessed the grant of the church of Langtune to the Abbey of Kelso c. 1150 (Kelso, 138), and c. 1202—22 Robert de Duns, capellanus, witnessed the gift of the church of Brennath (Birnie in Moray) to the same abbey (ibid., 371). Robert de Douns of the county of Berewyk rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 208). Nicholas, son of Hugh of Duns, was steward of the earldom of Dunbar C. 1320 (Laing, 27), Nicholas filius Michaelis de Duns appears as a charter witness in 1332 (BNCH., XVI, p. 327), and Maliseus de Duns witnessed a Yester charter of 1374 (Yester, p. 26). William de Duns was custodian of the castle of Temptalloun in 1426 (RMS., II, 67), and witnessed a quit claim of the lands of Gladsmure in the following year (James II, p. 14). In 1430 Eustachius de Duns was on an assize of the lands of Gladmor (ibid., 16), and in 1443 he was procurator for David of Lauder (HMC., 12. Rep., App. pt. VIII, p. 176). William de Duns, son of quondam William de eodem, granted to Walter de Spens a charter of a husband-land in Duns in 1437—8 (ibid., p. 175). Patrick Dunse was a juror on the lands of Swinton in 1500 (Swinton, p. lxxii), Thomas Dunce is in record in Netherancrum in 1682 (Peebles CR.), and William Dunce, sometime miller at the mill of Airies, is recorded in 1751 (Wigtown).
