Of territorial origin from the old barony of Dunsyre in Lanarkshire. John, lord of Dunsyer, son of Adam of Dunsyer, sold to Alan de Denume the land of Le Hyllis in 1299, and Andrew, vicar of Dunsyer, was one of the witnesses to the sale (REG., p. 214,215). Mariorie de Dunsier of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 207). Patrick of Donsyer, servant of Andrew Gray, had a safe conduct into England in 1425 (Bain, IV, 986). Robert of Dunsyar, Scottish merchant, had a safe conduct to travel in the same country in 1486 (ibid., 1517), Thomas Dunsyre in Ponfeich, parish of Douglas, is recorded in 1623 (Lanark CR.), and Andrew Dynsyre, carbonarius in Methill, 1681 (Inquis. Tut., 1061).
