An ancient personal name, Latinized Durandus. Durandus, vicecomes, perambulated the bounds of Clerchetune (Clerkington, East Lothian), c. 1141 (RPSA., p. 181). Michael, son of Durand, witnessed grant by Thomas, son of Andrew de Kyrconeuel, to the Abbey of Holmcultran, c. 1280—90 (Holm Cultram, p. 48). Wautier Durant of Dumfriesshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a squirrel within interlaced squeres, S' Walted Doraumt (Bain, II, p. 198,551). In 1297 there is mention of a royal message to (among others) Walter and John Duraunt (ibid., 884). John Durand witnessed a notarial instrument in Dumfries, 1453 (Edgar, p. 225). Malcolm Durande, prebendary of Lochmaben, 1478, appears in 1497 as Malcolm Durans, canon of Glasgow and prebendary of Gowan (Govan) (REG., p. 438,478, 495). John Durand, notary public, Dumfries, 1506 (Edgar, p. 227), probably a son of above John. Robert Durrance, witness in Glasgow, 1519 (LCD., p. 219). Gilbert Durandis was renter of a half-mark land in Carmyle, 1526 (Rental), and Thomas Durrane is recorded in Edgartoun, 1679 (Kirkcudbright).

Durrant has been for ages a Norfolk name. In the reign of Henry VI., the Durants or Duraunts held Hall Place Manor in South Lynn, and the name is still in Lynn. A Norwich family of Durrant was buried in St. Bennet's church in that city between 1684 and 1706; and there were marbles in Scothowe church to another family of Durrant bearing dates between 1697 and 1723 (Bl.). This is an ancient pre - Domesday name (L.), though according to Ferguson it came with the Normans.
