Duray Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
DURAY: The surname of an old family in Edzell in Angus derived from the office of 'Dereth.' A writ in the Chartulary of Dunfermline, dated c. 1250, by Robert the abbot, grants the office of 'Dereth ' which, as the title of the deed explains, 'hoc est officium sergiandi' (the office of sergeand), to Symon called Dereth, son of the late Thomas Dereth of Kynglassy (RD., 234). Robert Dereth' de Dunfermelyn carried letters of Edward I to the earl of Menteath, 1304 (Bain, IV, p. 480). In 1517 Alexander Dure was a monk of Arbroath (RAA., II, 543). Margaret Dirrow in Puggistoune, parish of Montrose, 1609, and three others of the name are recorded in that neighborhood (Brechin). Although the Durays of Durayhill appear in record for the first time so late as in 1644, when John Dirrow of Dirrowhill was appointed "to goe to the presbiterie for competent knowledge to go to the Generali Assemblie which is to be holden at Edinburgh ye 22d Jan. 1645," (Jervise, Land of the Lindsays, p. 418), they were evidently then of old standing, as they designated themselves 'of that Ilk.' They were the hereditary dempsters of the lairds of Edzell and they appear also to have had special charge of the bell of St. Laurence. Although they designated themselves as 'of that Ilk' it is evident that their farm of Durayhill on the North Esk took its name from the office. The surname is now probably lost in Durie, a name which has a quite different origin. Old forms of the name ere Dirroc, Dirra, and Durro.
