Durey Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Doraidh Leitrim and Roscommon.
Dore (q.v.) is occasionally used as a Variant. SIF 61
Durr must be distinguished from Dore alias Dower (Ó Doghair), which is a name belonging to Counties Kerry, Limerick and South Tipperary and was sometimes written O'Dure in mediaeval times (though this may be a foreign clerk's attempt to write O'Dwyer *); and we even find it taking the form O'Durey in Co. Limerick as late as 1679.About that time in the form of Dower or O Dower it was listed in Petty's “census” as a principal Irish name in the barony of Decies (Co. Waterford) and in the Co. Tipperary hearth money rolls we find nine families called Dower. One O'Dower appears among the 1641 outlaws: he was of Co. Wicklow. Without the prefix O, Dore and Dorey are still more difficult to identify in the absence of a family pedigree or tradition, for Dorey is an English toponymic and Dore may be an anglicized form of the French Doré. As long as these names are found in Munster we can be fairly confident of their Gaelic origin; but elsewhere these various forms have appeared in many widely separated places.
In the seventeenth century hearth money rolls Dury and Dorre are in Co. Derry, and Dury in Antrim; and in the Fiants we meet Dorre in Co. Carlow. Durr and Dury (gaelice Ó Doraidh) belong by origin to Counties Leitrim and Roscommon where, however, these have sometimes been registered as Dorr and even occasionally Dore.
