Durose Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname in England originates from the village of Bramshall, Staffordshire where it is first recorded in the 1580's. Earlier phonetically similar spellings in other areas seem to be variants of the more common name Devereux(e.g. Dewrose, Duerose, Deverose). It seems very unlikely that later migrations such as the Huguenots are the source of the name.
It is possible that Durose is a variation of the more common surname Dewhurst/Duhurst through a series of spelling/pronunciation changes which took place during the 16th and early 17th centuries. A number of original documents mention a family named Duhurst who inherited land in Bramshall in the early 16th century and a series of local wills show that the spelling of the name as Duhurst-Durust-Durus-Durous-Durose. A Richard Durust, Husbandman of Bramshall whose will is recorded in 1618 seems to be identical to a Richard Durose Buried at Bramshall in the same year.
Alternatively, the first member of the family in the area may have been a Breton supporter of Lord Robert Willoughby de Broke. Willoughby De Broke was an important landowner in the area, Lord of the manor of Bramshall and loyal to of Henry VII.
