John Darach was bailie of Stirling in 1406 (ER., IV, p. 26). John Darach de Cruce mentioned in 1445 (Cambus., 214) may be John Darraugh, commissioner for the burgh of Stirling in 1450 (Ayr, p. 28). Jonete Daroch is in record in 1458 (RMS., II, 671), and Mariote Darrauch appears as nurse of the Lady Margaret, second daughter of James 11, 1462 (ER., I. p. cclxxxv). Marion Darroch in Stirling in 1471 protested that she had not given consent to the alienation of an annual rent due to her (Sc. Ant., X, p. 32). Jacobus Darow, notary public, who was a witness in 1477 'apud manierium de Keir' (RMS., II, 1301), appears again as Jac. Darroch (ibid., 2388), ana may be the James Darrow who was notary public in St. Andrews, 1482 (Cambus., 213). William Darroch was witness in Ayr, 1505 (Friars Ayr, p. 72). Duncan Darrow was deacon of craft in Stirling, 1522 and 1525 (SBR., p. 24,275); Alexander Darroch was witness in Edinburgh, 1545 (RMS., III, 3094); and Ninian Derroicht, Thomas Darroicht, and Robert Darroycht appear in Glasgow in 1550 (Cambus., 214). People named Darroch were at one time common in Islay and Jura, and were counted a sept of Clan Donald. (1) The Stirling Darrochs derive from the place named Darroch near Falkirk. (2) The name may also be from adjectival form of a lost MacDara, 'son of oak.' compare Mace Darn in the Book of Armagh. With 'son of oak,' compare MacCarthainn, 'son of Rowan' (tree). See also MacDhubhdara. (3) Popular tradition in the West Highlands is that the name is from Doth riabhach, a shortening of Mac 'llle riabhach, but this seems doubtful.
