Dusenbury Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Dusenbury name and its variants are uniquely American, having been Anglicized by Hendrick Hendrickson Van Doesburg, who arrived in New Amsterdam in the mid 17th century from Doesburg, Amsterdam. After the surrender of New Amsterdam to the English and the subsequent naming of New York, Hendrick changed his name to be more English sounding. Hence there is no ancestral appearance of this name in Amsterdam or elsewhere in Europe. Hendrick was the son of Hendrick from Doesburg and adopted the surname of Van Doesburg (from Doesburg) to distinguish himself from other Hendrick Hendricksons living in New Amsterdam at the time.

- vandoesburg

The correct spelling of Van Doesburg's name should be Hendrick Hendricksen (not Hendrickson).
