Dwight Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Dionisia'. This name has caused much trouble. Mr. Lower suggests a corruption of Thwaite. A much simpler origin would be that it is a corruption of the once common Dyot (v. Dyet and Dyson), the pet name of Dionisia; compare Dwarber for Dauber, Dwyer for Dyer, and note the following entry:
Magota Duyott, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
The usual form in this register of names is Dyot and Diot; v. Dight.
The following are contained in the register of St. Peter, Cornhill, i. 86:
1634. Baptised — Elizabeth, d. William Dwoit, tallow-chandler.
1635. — Marye, d. William Dweyght, tallow-chandler.
The above is strong evidence in favour of my view. William Dwyte, Mayor of Thetford, 1511: History of Norfolk.
1767. Married — James Clough and Jane Dwight: St. George, Hanover Square.
(Teutonic) for earlier De Wytle or De Witt, Dutch De Wit = The White (One) [Dutch de, the; wit, white]
(English) Descendant of Dwight or Diot, possibly pet forms of Dionysus (Greek god of wine); the light-complexioned person.
Possibly a corruption of Thwaite.
From Doit. William de Doito, Ralph, Walter, Rainald, Richard, 1185-95, in Normandy (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); William del Doyt in England, 1272 (Rotuli Hundredorum).
