An old burgess family of Aberdeenshire who derived their name from the lands of Dyce in the parish of the same name. The first of the name recorded appears to have been John de Diss who was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1467 (NSCM., I, p. 16). Ranald Diss was a parishioner of Kinkell in 1473 (Inverurie, p. 122), and George Dyss was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1482 (NSCM., I, p. 30). Other old forms of the surname are Dyes and Dys. An account of the family in the Thanage of Fermartyn (p. 678—684). Alexander Dyce (1798—1869), Shakespearian scholar, and William Dyce (1806—1864), founder of the Pre-Raphaelite movement in the English school of painting are the best known.
