From the occupation of dyer, one whose trade is to dye cloth, rendered in Latin documents by tinctor. Henry tinctor in Dumfriesshire, c. 1259 (Sain, I, 2176; APS., I, p. 88), Roger tinctor held land in Aberdeen, 1332 (RMS., I, 682), and John Dyer called 'talp,' was admitted burgess of the same town in 1436 (NSCM,, I, p. 4). In Scotland tinctor was more commonly rendered Litsteh, which see.
