Eagar Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Eagar and Egar are the spellings usual in Kerry, Eager in Co. Down and north Louth: these are the two areas in which these names are mainly found. In the latter Agar has been recorded as a synonym, but for the most part this is a surname of different origin: according to Reaney it is an abbreviated form of Elgar, whereas Eagar is a form of Edgar. A family of Agar was very prominent in Co. Kilkenny in the eighteenth century, having come from Yorkshire to Gowran following a matrimonial alliance with the Blanchfields in 16: two of this family, both sons of Henry Agar M.P. were created peers, Charles, Earl of Normanton, also becoming Archbishop of Dublin in 1801. These people, however, had no connexion with the Eagars now under consideration.
The Eagars of Co. Kerry have been prominent among the gentry of that county since 1660 when Alexander Eagar left Queen's County, where his father (Major Robert Eagar an officer in Charles I's army) had acquired an estate. Two centuries later they are listed among the extensive landowners of Co.
Kerry, by which time they had intermarried with many of the principal families of that county. In the 1660's, however, the name was by no means confined to Munster: we find it for example among the householders in Co. Armagh at that time. Nor indeed was it, or is it, confined to the Protestant “ascendancy” in Kerry for it is quite numerous among the Catholic population there.
Though unconnected with the families referred to above it is of interest to note that as early as 1356 the name occurs in the Ormond Deeds as that of an attorney at Ardmayle. In the Elizabethan Fiants we find an O'Eger in Leix. This is perhaps a form of the name which appears about the same time (1589) in the Ormond Deeds for Co. Kilkenny in the person of Anstace ny Egher, but this cannot be equated with Eager: I take it to be O'Hegher, an early anglicized form of Ó h-Aichir (mod. O'Hehir).
This is the spelling used by families in Kerry where they have been prominent since the mid-seventeenth century; Eager is found in north Louth and Down. Another English name, Agar, has been recorded as a synonym, but this family, which settled in Co.
Kilkenny, is of different origin. Bibl; SIF 62
