From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the old barony of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. Dominus Robertus de Heiglssam, chaplain, witnessed a confirmation by Alexander filius Walteri of his father's gifts to the church of Paisley in 1239 (RMP., p. 225). Barthelmeu de Egglesham, chapeleyn, was warden of the New Place of Seneware (Sanquhar) in the county of Dunfres in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206). William de Eglisham, rector of the church of Dunbarny in 1300 (RPSA., p. 120), reappears as William de Egglisham, archdeacon of Lothian in 1316 (Neubotle, 147; Kelso, 310), and in 1323 as official of St. Andrews (RAA., I, p. 308). Henry de Eglishame was one of an inquest on lands in Aberdeenshire in 1335 (REA., I, p. 61) Thomas Eglishame and Fergus Eglishame, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Magister George Eglischane, physician to King James VI, was retoured heir to John Eglischane burgess of Edinburgh, in 1616 (Inquis., 632). In 1626 Dr. George Eglisheim published a curious book entitled The Fore-Runner of revenge upon the duke of Buckingham for the poysoning of the most potent king, James VI." There is an account of the book in Calderwood's History, VII, p. 634—638. As Eglesame it is an old surname in the parish of Ballantrae (Paterson, II, p. 87), and Hugh Egleshim appears in Knockreavie in 1784 (Wigtown). Eagleson is a variant.
