Eaglinton Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the lands of the same name in the Cunningham district of Ayrshire, the 'tun of Eglun.' Brice de Eglunstone, son of quondam Eglun, dominus de Eglunstone, had a grant of twenty acres of land in feuferme from the burgh of Irvine in 1205 (Irvine, I, p. 3). Rauf de Eglyntone of the county of Arne rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a hare in her form, foliage, and S' Radvlfi de Eglintun (Bain, II, p. 205,549). In the same year he was juror on an inquest held on the lands of Lady Elena la Zuche in Conyngham (ibid., p. 216). Hugh de Eglynton or Eglyntoun appears several times as a charter witness between 1357 and 1372 (REB., I, 16; CAB., p. 539—540; Irvine, I, 12; Inchaffray, p. 126)."The gude Syr Hew of Eglintoun" is commemorated by Dunbar in his "Lament for the Makaris." William Eglyntoune was a witness in Glasgow in 1550 and 1554 (Protocols, I), and Jonet Eglinton in Nethermains, parish of Kilbryde, is in record in 1632 (Campsie). The family appears to have ended in the direct line in the latter half of the fourteenth century, when the heiress, Elizabeth, married Sir John Montgomery.
The castle and lands of Eglinton are in Ayrshire. They gave name as early as the time of William the Lion, to a distinguished family. This family ended in an heiress in the XIV. century, and she married Sir John Montgomery, a lineal ancestor of the present Earl of Eglinton.
EGLINTOUN: Local: from Eglintoun in Ayrshire.
The Eglintons of Norwich and its vicinity bear the name of the rector of Baldeswell in 1644, and of the rector of Sharington in 1758 (Bl.); and in the same manner the Emerys of the neighbonrbood of Dereham have a namesake or an ancestor in the vicar of Rushall, Norfolk, in 1581 (Bl.). Emery is a form of the ancient personal name of Amory.
