This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ekin,' but what this is the pet name for I have not discovered. It evidently belongs to the same class as Watkin, Wil-kin, Tomp-kin, &c, which gave us the genitive forms of Watkins, Wilkins, Tompkins, &c. The only explanation I can suggest is that Ekin is a modification of Edkin (v. Edkins).
