(English) Nobleman, Chief Middle English erl, Old English eorl = Old Saxon erl = Old Norse jarl] Roger le Erl.—Hundred Rolls
These two names are quite distinct. The Earls family has been settled in Co. Galway since the thirteenth century; Earle, of much later introduction, is not closely associated with any particular area. SIF 62
Mr. P. J. Kennedy, whose mother was an Earls, says that their tradition is that the name is of Bristol origin. “The Earls family”, he states, “was one of the earliest settlers in Athenry and the name occurs there in the thirteenth century (see Blake Family Records, Vol. I). The name is still quite common in the mid-Galway parishes of Grange and Killimordaly and the only other places in which it occurs in the Republic are in Limerick (an undertaker), one family in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, one in Clones and one in Arklow. It is entirely distinct from Earle and Errol.” This is borne out by birth registrations: those I have checked show that Earl and Earle are found mainly in Ulster, Earls and Earles in Co. Galway.
I noticed an Earls in the patent rolls at Lucan dated 1416. The Fiants have a Mac Inierligh in the Ormond country, which may have been anglicized Earl.
(English) Descendant of an earl; one connected in some way with an earl’s household; one who came from Earle (hill with an enclosure), in Northumberland.
Anglo-Saxon eorl. Primarily a man-a man of valour or consideration-vir; afterwards a head, ruler, leader, or hero; and finally a nobleman of the highest rank, equivalent to an "ealdor-man ;" an Earl. See Bosworth.
Osmond and Roger le Cont or Counte, Norm. 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). See Earl.
