Earwacker Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is likely derived from the Old English 'eofor' (boar) and 'wacer' (watchful,) a rare Anglo-saxon name that is found in the South of England. Given the concentration of Earwakeres and variants in the south, it is likely the name became corrupted in the late medieval and early modern period. The exact meaning of eoforwacer is lost, but it is highly unlikely it had anything to do with watching boars, as there is no evidence of such an occupation. It probably has some relation to Anglo-Saxon animism – a belief that plants and animals possessed a spiritual essence. The boar was seen as possessing battle prowess and Anglo-Saxon warriors sought to tap into this spirit by wearing boar skins and accoutrements such as boar decorated-helmets. Thus it is likely that the name arose to name a watchful warrior who invoked the spirit of the boar, or a child who was named in an attempt to transpose such characteristics on to them.
