(English) A merchant who came from the shores of the Baltic having a reputation for honest dealings, giving rise to the word “sterling".
A native of the Hanse Towns, or of the East of Germany. Merchants trading with us from those parts are called in medieval writings "Mercatores Estrenses."
Descended from some native of the Hanse Towns (Lower). The name occurs in England soon after the Conquest. See Stradling.
Easterling: corrupted into Stradling, a native of one of the Hanseatic towns. The pure coinage introduced by these in the reign of Richard I. gave rise to the expression Easterling or Sterling money. Hence our names Easterman, Oysterman, and Easte.
