This is a rare name now associated with Co. Limerick. As Abrill it occurs in the Co. Tipperary hearth money rolls of 1666 and in 1755 the will of John Ebrell of Darlinghill in the same county was proved.

John Averill, possibly another form of the same name, was bishop of Limerick in 1771 and dean of Limerick prior to that, but he was born in Co. Antrim. Averell is among the names introduced by the Plantation of Ulster.

Abril is a French surname cognate with Latin aprilis and is probably the origin of our Ebrill.
