From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lands of Echline in the parish of Dalmeny, West Lothian. Robert de Eghlin and Rauf Doghlyn (for d'Eghlyn) or Eghlyn of Edinburghshire swore fealty to England in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 201,203). The seal of Robert bears a rude figure of S. Michael overcoming the dragon, S' Radulfi de Echelon, and the seal of Rauf bears a fleur-de-lys, S' Rodvifii de.Eclin (ibid., p. 551,558). A horse was purchased from Johannes de Eghelyn in 1312 (ibid., III, p. 421). John de Heychlyn had confirmation to him of the lands of Garmylton in 1319 (RHM., I, 22), John de Eychlin, 'tunc senescallus baronie de Coldingham,' was a charter witness in 1332 (BNCH., XVI, p. 327), and Johan de Echlyne was vicar of Kinneff in 1407 (Stodart, II, p. 417). William Echeline or Echelyn of St. Andrews diocese was granted the perpetual vicarage of Inchemacbany in the diocese of Aberdeen in 1345 (Pap. Lett., III, p. 94). William Echling of Pittadro is in record in 1457 (RD., 452), and John Echline of Pittadrow, professor of philosophy in St. Leonard's College, St. Andrews, died in 1603.
