From the lands of Eckford near Kelso, Roxburghshire. Alexander de Hecford witnessed a charter by Alan, son of Roland, lord of Galloway, of the lands of Vlfkelyston (now Oxton) to the Abbey of Kelso in 1206 (Kelso, p. 202), Geoffrey de Ekkeford received confirmation of a charter of land in the village and territory of Home, c. 1250 (ibid., 508), and Richard le fiz Geffrai de Ekford of the county of Rokesburk rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 203). Wilzam of Hekfurde was "a clerk of gret wertu" in Glasgow (Wyntoun, Chronicle, v. 5, p. 395, S. T. S. ed.). John of Ekford, Scottish merchant, complained in 1358 that goods of great value were carried from the wreck of his ship at Cotum in Clyveland (Bain, IV, 26). The name occurs in Edinburgh in 1596 as Aikfurd (Edinb. Marr.), and William Eckford was tenant in Keephope in 1765 (Lauder). Aikfoord 1686, Eckfoord 1659.
