Stodart says (II, p. 315) there seems to have been two separate families of this name, one taking their surname from Eccles in Berwickshire, the other from Eccles in Dumfriesshire. Adam de Eccles witnessed a charter by Grim, son of Guido, to the Abbey of Melrose, c. 1170 (Seats Supp., 329). Johan de Eccles of Berwickshire rendered homage in 1296, and Sir Mathew del Ecles of Dumfriesshire was juror in 1304 (Bain, II, p. 206,412). Matthew de Eychles resigned his half of the barony of Ouras in Kincardineshire in favor of Thomas Rate, 1371 (RMS., I, 314,383). Matthew of Eclys witnessed a charter by Roland Kenedy, lord of Blarechan (Blairquhan), c. 1390 (Laing, 72), and Robert de Ecclesia was tenant of the earl of Douglas in Drumcork, 1376 (RHM., I, p. Ivi). John Eklis of that Ilk and Mongo Eklis, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). The latter may be the Mungo Ekclis mentioned in a letter of protection by James v in 1530 (RSS., II, 642). Eccles of that Ilk in Dumfriesshire were seated there till after the Reformation (Stodart II, p. 315), and William Eccles was retoured heir of John Eccles de Kildonan, 1668 (Retours, Ayr, 556). From the family of Eccles of Kildonan are descended the county Tyrone family of the name Eickles 1657, Ekillis 1502, Eklys 1362.
