Although this feminine font-name is now obsolete, it has made a most remarkable impression on our English directories. It lingered into the 17th century as a personal name. Every imaginable variant of the surname is found. No doubt the name was occasionally a nick, of Edward or Edmund, but the above derivation must be looked upon as absolutely decisive in the case of the great majority.
