Édes is a Hungarian name meaning 'sweet' or 'charming'. In 1638 Gergely Édes, his wife Katalin Kerekes, and 4 brothers; Vince, Ferenc, Mátyás and György, were granted nobility by Hapsburg Emperor, Ferdinand III, in Poszony, now Bratislava. They were granted land in and near the village of Madar, now Modrany, Slovakia where many of their descendants now live.
An 18th century family document claims that they had been soldiers in Transylvania for Prince Gabor Bethlen and were forced to flee after Bethlen's death due to conflicts with the new prince. The story states that their original surname wasÉde, a patronymic. They changed their name to Édes in order to hide their identity.
The Édes families Anglicized their surnames to Edes when migrating to English speaking countries.
