The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Belonging to Edinburgh, anciently E(a)dwines-burg = EAdwine’s Strong- hold [Old English burg, a stronghold, fortress] The Eádwine was, of course, the famous King of Northumbria. But as in the 7th cent. we find such Celtic forms as Etin, Eidden, Dineiddyn [Welsh din = Gaelic dún, a hill-fort], and in the Pictish Chronicle (10th cent.) Oppidum Eden-Gaelic Dunedin, it is not unreasonable to suppose that the Old English name may have been an assimilated (and translated) form of an earlier Celtic name.
