EDOLF: From the common Old English personal name Ead(w)ulf, 'blessed wolf.' Edultus filius Norman witnessed David's great charter to Melrose a. 1153 (Nat. MSS., I, 17). Edulf prepositus de Molla a. 1177 (RMP., p. 74). Edulf, son of Vtredi obtained from Richard de Moreuille the lands of Gillemoristun 'que antiquitus uocabatur peniacob' a. 1189 (REG., p. 39), and changed the place name to Edulfestun, later corrupted by vulgar pronunciation to Eddleston. He also got from the same Richard de Moreville some lands in the territory of Lochogow in Lothian where he settled. He was succeeded by his son, Adam, and he by his son, Constantin (Neubotle, 33—38). Dominus Adam filius Edolfi was one of the witnesses to the Diulse de Stobbo, c. 1190 (REG., p. 89). Adam, son of Edulph, confirmed to Constantine, his son 'pro homagio et servitio suo' a part of his land in the territory of Eduluistun 'que olim vocabatur Peniacob' (ibid., p. 142). Ade filius Edulphi granted a charter to Neubotle Abbey c. 1230 (Neubotle, 25), and c. 1245 there is a confirmation charter by 'Constantinus filius Ade filii Edulfi,' among the witnesses to which is 'Constantino filio meo' (ibid., 26).
