A common surname in Braemar and Cromar in the seventeenth century and earlier and still found there. The name represents a Gaelic attempt at the name Adam (Adhamh), with medial dh hardened to g. In the phonetically spelled Fernaig MS. (of date 1688) the name is written 'Ahu,' and in the still earlier manuscript of the Dean of Lismore (c. 1520) it appears as 'Awzoe' (z here a guttural y). Eggou ruffus made a gift of land to the Priory of May early in the thirteenth century (RPSA., p. 282), and Ego filius Gilberti (for Gillebride) was a serf of the Abbey of Dunfermline in the same century (RD., p. 220). Ego de Strathhathe of Penh rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 200), and Michel le fiz Ego was one of an inquest in Stirling, 1304 (ibid., p. 381). Ego 'marus' was one of an inquest relating to the Priory of Roustenot (Restennet) in 1322 (RMS., I, App. 1, 29). Ego, son of Fergus, earl of Mar, had confirmation of a charter of land of Huchtirerne (Auchterairn) in Cromarre, 1364 (RMS., I, 191; Sc. Ant., II, p. 10: in Robertson's Index his name is wrongly given as Eugene-RMS., I, App. 2, 1500). Robertus filius Ego in the parish of Tarwas (Tarves) was excommunicated, 1382 (REA., I, p. 166). Henry Ego and Thomas Ego appear as charter witnesses in Arbroath, 1467 (RAA., II, 174). David Ego was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1477, and Andrew Ego, 1498 (NSCM., I, p. 26, 39). Alane Ego held a lease of Bucham in 1477 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 205). Part of the lands of Drumsleed was leased to John Ego and Andrew Ego, his son, 1502 (RAA., II, 429). Merzone Ego is in record in Strathdee, 1527 (Grant, III, p. 70). Gilbert Egie in Dysart, 1543, and Thomas Egey, 1565 (Dysart Rec., p. 10, 32). John Ego was one of an assize in the regality of Spynie, 1597 (SCM., II, p. 139). Malcolm Ego, servitor to the Lady Mackintosh, signed the Clan Chattan Band of 1609 as witness, and is frequently mentioned in Mackintosh writs.
