There was a Norman family of L'Aigle. Matilda de Aquila, 1129, widow of Robert Mowbray, earl of Northumberland. (2) The name seems also to have been a signname, Gilbert de la Hegle being recorded in Sussex, 1273 (Bardsley). Alexander Eagell sometime at Halkhead, 1712 (RUG., III, p. 551).
Metaphorically applied to a person of ambitious or soaring disposition. There are several legendary stories of eagles which may have originated the name; e. q. that of De Aquila mentioned in this Dictionary, and the well-known Stanley tradition.
