The origin of the Elamparo surname is from the the Portuguese and Spanish words el amparo which means 'the refuge', 'the shelter', or 'the protector'.

During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines in the 19th century, the Governor General ordered the creation of surnames to change the method of naming the people from biblical characters and to facilitate the tax collection more efficiently. They collected different words derived from persons, places, or things, and compiled them in a book Catalogue of Surnames. It is most likely that Elamparo was coined from the phrase el amparo.

The surnames were distributed alphabetically to all provinces and the head of the family in each town were called to select the surname that they would adapt.

The Elamparo surname is most prevalent at the towns of Masinloc & Candelaria in Zambales, and at Igbaras in Iloilo, Philippines.
