From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the barony of the same name now incorporated in the parish of Longformacus, Berwickshire. Henry de Ellom of the county of Berewyk rendered homage in 1296, and Adam de Elom was received to the king of England's peace in 1321 (Bain, II, p. 203; III, 724). Another Henricus de Ellame is mentioned in 1362 (RMS., I, 137), Richard de Ellum appears as a charter witness in Edinburgh in 1367 (ibid., 265), and Malaseus Ellam was vicar of Forgund in 1463 (CMN., 33). John Ellum de Rutterden, who is mentioned in a retour of the lands of Wedderburn in 1469 (Sc. Ant., VII, p. 25) is doubtless the John Elleme against whom a process was issued in 1475 for holding Dunbar Castle against the king (APS., II, p. 125). John of Ellem of Buttirden occurs again in record in 1478 (Home, p. 18, 24), and in 1495 there is mention of a David Ellem (ibid., p. 25, 27). John Ellem was retoured heir of Slichthouss in the barony of Bonkle in 1597, and another John Ellem was retoured heir of Peter Ellem in the lands and barony of Butterdene in 1600 (Retours, Berwickshire, 14, 19, 58, 95,493). John Ellem was portioner of Bassindene in 1636 (Inputs., 2207), and Stiphane Ailme was one of a number who attested the bounds of Hattonis Croft, 1651 (Home, p. 220). Ellim 1605. Rrief accounts of the Ellems of Butterdean are in Thomson's Coldingham parish and priory (p. 227—232), and in the History of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club (XIX, p. 355—362).
