The Elkingtons of Elkington, Northamptonshire, were an ancient gentle family, and from them branched off the Elkingtons of Shawell, Leicestershire, in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries (Nichols' "Leicestershire"). John Elkington, a Leicestershire gentleman, contributed £25 for the defence of his country at the time of the expected invasion of the Armada.
