This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Elye'; Old French for English Ellis. The genitive or patronymic form would be Elyes, thus differing slightly from the English Ellis. Helias or Helyas, clericus regis, de Munros, c. 1178—1214 (RAA., I, 1, 9). Helya, canon of Glasgow, 1177—1199 (RMP., p. 99), is probably Helias frater domini Jocelini, bishop of Glasgow, c. 1170 (Kelso, 356). Helias, clericus, son of Fulbert (of Pollok) granted the church of Mernes to the monks of Paisley, c. 1189—99 (RMP., p. 100). In the confirmation charter by King William the Lion which follows he is named Helias de Pertheic (Partick). As Elya or Helya, canon of Glasgow, he is a charter witness between 1175—1207 (ibid., p. 109,110). Helias was parson of Old Rokesburg, c. 1190—1232 (Kelso, p. 136; Melros, p. 229). Helya de Elmedene witnessed charter by Ebrardus de Penkathleht to the church of St. Cuthbert of Durham in reign of William the Lion (Raine, 163). Helia vicarius de Baneth', 1233 (REM., p. 97). A pardon was granted to Elyas de Vaus, 1307 (Bain, II, 1919). As forename: Elias Tervett, 1509 (Trials, I, p. 110).
