This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Elcote.' Not to be confounded with Ellisot, which see. I made this mistake in my English Surnames. I cannot find the place. It is told of Dean Elliot, whose superior was Bishop Ellicott, that he was wont to say humorously that he was the bishop without the c, as good a pun as nomenclature ever boasted.

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Elcote.' Not to be confounded with Ellisot, which see. I made this mistake in my English Surnames. I cannot find the place. It is told of Dean Elliot, whose superior was Bishop Ellicott, that he was wont to say humorously that he was the bishop without the c, as good a pun as nomenclature ever boasted. The 't' in Ellicot is intrusive for euphony's sake; ct Greenaway for Greenway, or Hathaway for Hathway.

"The family originally came to Kerry in consequence of an early marriage of one of the Fitz-Maurices, Barons of Lixnaw. with an heiress of that name: and by reason of this connection Fitz-Maurice is said to bear a tower in his coat of arms: and a parish of Kerry, near Tralee, is called Bally-Mac-Elligott.'' D'Alton. The name took the form of Ellicott in the seventeenth century.
