From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname has a topographic origin, that is, it was assumed by an individual who lived at Elmet. It is unusual in that Elmet was a medieval kingdom in what is now Yorkshire. I am not familiar with any other surname, with such a derivation. Elmet is now an unofficial region, and its name is preserved in the parishes of Sherburn-in-Elmet and Barwick-in-Elmet. The exact origin cannot be ascertained, but may have arisen from someone who lived at a a place prefixed with '-in-Elmet,' a place in the Elmet region, or a now lost place of the name of Elmet. Early occurrences place the name in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, near the Elmet region.
The origin of the name Elmet is unknown, thought it is believed to be Celtic. The are an unusual number of Celtic place names surviving in the area. See History Files for a discussion. The Welsh called Elmet, Elfed, which is pronounced Elved in English. Early antiquarian Edward Lhuyd, of Llanforda Hall, Oswestry, suggested that it had a shared origin with the Welsh word, which came from the same root as 'Elyfdd,' (or 'Elyfth' in English,) meaning 'country.' Elfed means 'autumn.'
