A surname now found mainly in Aberdeenshire, and doubtless of English origin. Robert de Elmleghe or de Elmeley of Aberdeenshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 195,206). William de Elmysley was one of an inquisition in Aberdeen, 1333 (REA., I, p. 54), and Thomas Elmyslie was admitted burgess there, 1498 (NSCM., I, p. 39). William Elmislie was reidare at Rutbven, 1574 (RMR.). Robert Elmslie was in Cultballoch, 1599 (Dunblane), and John Elmislye was tenant of the Dauche (in Inchmamoche, Banffshire), 1600 (SCM., IV, p. 315). James Emslie of Loanhead first systematically quarried the famous Aberdeen granite between 1715 and 1745 (Watt, Aberdeen and Banff, p. 337—338). Robert Elmslie was member of the Huntly Volunteers, 1801 (Will, p. 19), and a family named Elmsley were owners of Pitmedden, Dyce, in middle of nineteenth century (AEI., p. 4).
