A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

There is a group of names which may fairly be placed around this as a common centre; viz. Alphe, Alphen, Alphew, Alpheg, Elphee, Elfeck, Alphegh, &c. AElfech occurs in Domesd. as having been a sub-tenant in Sussex, temp. Edw. Confessor, and not long previously, viz. A.D. 1006, St. Elphegus or Alphage was Archbishop of Canterbury. The personal name is evidently of Anglo-Saxon origin, and it has been derived from two words in that language-al, all, and fegan, to fix or join, and interpreted to signify "a man who can do anything; a Jack of all Trades."
