From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Alfech.' Mr. Lower says, 'Elfech occurs in Domesday as having been a subtenant in Sussex, temp. Edward the Confessor, and not long previously (1006) St. Elphegus or Alphagewas archbishop of Canterbury' (Patr. Brit). This derivation seems natural.

(English) the Domesday Ælfec(h, &c., Anglo-Saxon Ælfheág or Ælfheáh = Elf-High or Elf-Sublime [Old English ælf, elf + heáh, high, supreme, sublime] St. Alphege, or Ælfheáh, Archbishop of Canterbury, was killed A.D. 1012.
There is a group of names which may fairly be placed around this as a common centre; viz. Alphe, Alphen, Alphew, Alpheg, Elphee, Elfeck, Alphegh, &c. AElfech occurs in Domesd. as having been a sub-tenant in Sussex, temp. Edw. Confessor, and not long previously, viz. A.D. 1006, St. Elphegus or Alphage was Archbishop of Canterbury. The personal name is evidently of Anglo-Saxon origin, and it has been derived from two words in that language-al, all, and fegan, to fix or join, and interpreted to signify "a man who can do anything; a Jack of all Trades." Encycl. Perthensis.
