ELSHENER, Elshenar, Elshendeh, Alshioner: Local or dialectal pronunciations of Alexander, which see, which have become fixed surnames. Alexander Aleschunder was bailie of Stirling, 1555 (SBR., p. 278), Euphame Elchyneur is in record in Perth, 1561 (Sc. Ant., I, p. 101), and Alexander Elzenour was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1574 (NSCM., I, p. 71). Alexander Alshunder of Menstrie in record 1589 (Sc. Ant., VI, p. 164), John Alshenour was accused of theft in Spynie in 1596, and in the following year Katherine Elshenour was burnt for witchcraft in Aberdeen (SCM., II. p. 133, V, p. 68). Archibald Alexshunde or Alschunder appears as bailie and dean of guild in Stirling, 1596 and 1600 (SBR., p. 95,281, 282). Gilbert Alshenour was warded in the Tolbooth of Aberdeen in 1605 (CRA., p. 267), David Alschunder, merchant burgess of Edinburgh, 1617 (Inquis., 693), and John Alshioner was burgess of Aberdeen, 1633 (SCM., III, p. 117). James Elsheoner in Inverness was described in 1627 as an idle and masterless man (RPC., 2. ser, II, p. 97), and Deacon Elshender, a one-time celebrated worthy of Arbroath (d. 1840), is commemorated in Poems on various subjects (p. 69,137, and notes) by J.
