This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Heloise' (Yonge), a popular English name in it the day, generally found as Helewise or Helwys. Elwes in the London Visitation (1634) traces from Helwis, vel Helwish (i. 256). William de Lancaster, Baron of Kendal (temp. Henry II),' married Helwisede Studevill, and by her had issue Helwise, his daughter, and heir': West's Ant. of Furness. That Elwes and Elves now represent the name there can be no doubt.
