Dweller at the ing-land or meadow land.
Engelond occurs several times in H.R. as a surname, without any prefix. It seems quite absurd to have adopted the name of one's country while still residing in it, as a family name; but I am inclined to think that it was first given to an Englishman when living in a foreign country, and that he, on his return, continued to use it. Or, England may possibly be the name of some obscure locality of which the family were anciently possessed, just as the Hollands take their name, not from the land of Dutchmen, but from a district of Lincolnshire.
Or of England, equivalent to English.
From the Danish, Engelund; from the Swedish, Englund; a personal name.
The name of England was represented in this county six centuries ago by Engelond (H. R.).
Jonathan England, one of the martyrs of the Monmouth rebellion in 1685, was executed at Taunton (W.).
The Englands of the West Riding belong to a very ancient family of Scot Hall, Potter - Newton, in Leeds parish, in which parish the name still occurs (Th.). The name also occurs in Hunts and Somerset. In the 13th century it was represented by Engelond in Hunts, Bucks, and Norfolk (H. R.). New England is a Northamptonshire hamlet.
