William le Englich, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.
As le Frenssh is so common in this register it is quite possible that in some cases a feeling of opposition gave rise to a nickname; a game of French and English at an early date. But the Scotch Inglis is no doubt the chief parent.
1668. Married — Richard Inglish and Elizabeth Macland: St. James, Clerkenwell.
From ME. adjective English, "English,' i.e. an Englishman, LL. Anglicus. Richard Anglicus appears as witness c. 1220 (CMN., 10), and Reginald and Radulf Anglico attest a charter c. 1330 (RHM., I, p. 39). Thomas Engilsk gave up land he unlawfully bought in Shetland, 1485 (OSR., I, p. 54). Robert English and Samuel English were residents in the parish of Borgue in 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 566). First called L’Angleis etc.; in Co. Limerick since the thirteenth century and completely hibernicized. MIF 97
(English) An Englishman. Possibly the name was acquired while outside of England and brought back.
An additional name applied for distinction's sake, in early Norman times, to such persons as were permitted to retain their lands. Thus in Domesd. we find "quatuor Angli"-Four English, mentioned as holding in capite in Hampshire.
Borne by numerous Norman families. Adam, Alexander, Alvered, Asceline, Bernard, Henry, Elias, Gaufrid, and twenty more, bore, 1180-95, the name of Anglicus in Normandy (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). Twenty-four of the name of Anglicus are mentioned in 1198 (Ib.). The families of English or Inglis are all Norman. 'England’ is another form of Anglicus.
English: in Scotch Inglis, a designation acquired, as already explained, in Shewsbury and on the Welsh border, also in Scotland.
