EOGHANN: Gaelic Eoghann. The name comes from Olr. eo, a yew-tree, (Macneill, Oghams, p. 345), and means 'sprung from yew-tree.' It occurs twice in Adamnan, who mentions Iogenanus (Iogen-anus), brother of King Aidan (III, 5), and Iogenanus, a presbyter, 'gente Pictum' (II, 9). In later Scots Gaelic and Latin documents the name appears as Eugein, Eugen, Eogain, Heochgain, Heoghan, Heodgen, Avin, Oan, and Ohan, and in Welsh is Owein and Ywein. In the north or northwest it is correctly Englished Evan or Ewan, but in Argyllshire it is erroneously used as equivalent to Hugh. Like some other Gaelic names it arose from tree-worship among the early Gaels.
