From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Ger.) Eppo’s Stone (Castle) [O.H.Ger. stein]
Place name in Austria (Eberstein). Also in Alsace (Ebstein).
(German) One who came from Eppstein (Eppo's stone), in Germany; one who came from Ebstein, a place no longer in existence, in Styria.
(from a place name) This is one of the oldest Jewish family names and appears as early as 1392. There is an Eppstein in Bavaria, an Eppstein in Hesse, and an Ebstein in Styria, Austria. Of special interest is the Styrian family. In 1492 a family called Benveniste was expelled from Spain. One branch went to Turkey and maintained its Spanish name; a second branch came to Ebstein in Styria, Austria. This family were Levites, and Ebstein ultimately became Epstein. The name appears as Epsteen, Eppenstein, and in several other variations. During the course of the centuries the name was assumed by many people, not because of any relationship, but because it was so well known.
