In the reign of Malcolm II, a Scotchman killed with his own hand Enrique, one of the Danish leaders at the battle of Murthill, cut off his head, and with the bloody dagger in his hand showed it to the king, and said "Eriskyne," which signifies upon the knife, and also said "I intend to perform greater actions than what I have already done." Whereupon the king imposed upon him the surname of Eriskyne, which has since been contracted to Erskine and Areskine, and for his arms a hand holding a dagger, with the motto, "Je pense plus."
