The surname 'Ashkenazi' and its variants are rarely borne, however, by Ashkenazi Jews, but rather, nearly always by Jews from other ethnic divisions who have a distant Ashkenazi ancestor. This ancestor would have left his Ashkenazi community and joined a different Jewish community - Ashkenazi is most common as a surname amongst Syrian and Bukharan Jews. The surname is ultimately of Hebrew origin.
